Online Residency - Profiles

Andjelik. M

Joana Alarcão

Meet Andjelik M., an innovative artist whose artistic practice, delves into the realms of visual allure and profound sensory richness across a myriad of mediums. Through visual representations of subconscious symbolism within natural settings, she seeks to convey messages of growth, care, unity, and environmental justice.

During her November residency, Andjelik's work is a photographic and film exploration that blends symbolic imagery with experimental techniques, drawing poignant parallels between the human experience and elements of nature. Each piece weaves a narrative filled with dreamlike scenarios and introspective reflections, embodying the deep interconnectedness that binds humanity to the natural world.

Through her lens, she prompts us to consider our planet as a living entity, reaching out to communicate its essence. What might it convey if we paused to listen, rather than harm and ignore?

Andjelik delves into the realms of visual allure and profound sensory richness through a myriad of mediums.

Her art speaks to the essential aspect of the human experience and strives to transcend the limitations of the material world. Through visual representations of subconscious symbolism in the presence of the natural world, she aims to transmit messages of growth, care, unity and environmental justice.

Color plays a very important role, as her artistic approach is firmly rooted in extensive research on psychology and neuroscience underlying the experience of beauty in art.  She believes that art serves as a compelling conduit for guiding individuals towards transformation and deeper understanding.

Resonance Across Oceans

(Ongoing film project)

Imagine our home—our planet, its nature, its creatures, our Earth.

Imagine the Earth as a living entity. What would it say?

Imagine its existence unfolding within a dimension beyond our conventional understanding

—reaching out, trying to speak to us.

Imagine we don’t hear. We ignore. We harm. We—never—stop.

Imagine the reality. What happens then?

Who you are

An ongoing photographic exploration that blends symbolic imagery with experimental techniques to draw parallels between human essence and elements of nature.

These weave a narrative of dreamlike scenarios and introspective reflections, embodying the deep interconnectedness between humanity and the natural world.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and your artistic practice?

I am a multidisciplinary artist passionate about all forms of creation and dedicated to curating educational and inclusive artistic experiences and events. My practice revolves around visual poetry with profound meaning, expressed through mixed media, where I incorporate recycled materials and textiles, experimental immersive film, and manipulated analogue and digital photography. I also explore music production, working with solfeggio frequencies to create soundscapes that deepen the experience and connection to my pieces.

Can you tell me more about your fascination with transcending the limitations of the material world in your practice? What aspects of speaking to the essential aspects of the human experience are you most drawn to?

I believe that art serves as a catalyst for transformation, guiding individuals toward a deeper understanding of themselves and the world. What fascinates me most is the exploration of the inner world [how we perceive, feel, and connect beyond the tangible]. My practice is deeply rooted in subconscious symbolism, neuroscience, and psychology, allowing me to access the more elusive, essential aspects of human experience: memory, emotion, intuition, care, our relationship with our surroundings, and the interconnectedness of all things. I'm drawn to creating spaces, both physical and conceptual, that invite introspection and a sense of expanded awareness.

What motivated you to apply and participate in this online program? What were your initial goals and expectations?

Since I was a little girl, I’ve been deeply passionate about caring for the environment. I noticed a lot of neglect in this regard and made a promise to myself to do whatever I can to raise awareness and inspire change. This program caught my attention for the same reasons; seeing artists actively making a difference gives me hope and motivation.

My goal with this program was to refine my conceptual film ideas. To be honest, I had no specific expectations, but it turned out to be even better than I had imagined. I’m incredibly grateful for the experience.

Can you tell us more about Resonance Across Oceans, the film project you worked on during the program? What was the theme or focus? What was the creative process behind it?

Resonance Across Oceans is an ongoing experimental film project that poetically and conceptually encapsulates our relationship with our planet and the ways we have harmed it over time. The film aims to create awareness about care, reminding viewers that by nurturing our environment, we ultimately nurture ourselves.

With an emotional focus, the film weaves surreal aesthetics through carefully composed scenes and colorization, while the sound emanates a nostalgic feel. Together they evoke a dreamlike atmosphere that reinforces the sense of a distorted reality, one we have been conditioned to accept as normal.

What inspired me most in creating this piece is the depth of our connection to the natural world, a bond that extends beyond the physical and is essential for our growth and healing. The project began with a desire to immortalize how we interact with our environment and how it, in turn, responds to us, whether through embodiment or similarities between natural and human essences.

The inclusion of performative dance in the film serves as a reflection of the innate gratitude our bodies experience when immersed in nature. The universe itself is an endless dance of life, and through movement, we reconnect with this rhythm, using dance as a natural expression of healing and unity with the world around us.

During the virtual exhibition, you also exhibited a photographic series “that blends symbolic imagery with experimental techniques to draw parallels between human essence and elements of nature”. Could you elaborate on the conceptual and visual elements of this series?

This photographic series explores the deep, energetic connection between the human essence and nature through symbolic imagery and experimental techniques.

By using intense colors, I evoke specific emotions that amplify the relationship between the subject and their surroundings. Each hue carries meaning, guiding the viewer’s perception and emotional response.

The positioning of the human body plays a crucial role, as gestures and posture express a silent dialogue, whether by mirroring organic forms, blending into natural textures, or contrasting with them.

The integration of natural patterns and significant shapes serves as a visual metaphor for the ways in which we absorb, reflect, and interact with the environment.

This fusion of elements creates a layered symbolism, suggesting that our bodies are not separate from nature but rather extensions of it - woven into its rhythms, cycles, and vibration.

Can you share an example of how you and your fellow artists inspired or learned from each other during the collaborative process?

Every artist had a unique approach to their practice, yet the synergy of our shared themes fostered meaningful dialogue and enriched our perspectives. Coming from diverse backgrounds, we brought a wide range of viewpoints that proved invaluable to each other’s growth, allowing us to challenge, refine, and expand our creative processes.

If you could give one piece of advice to future participants of this program, what would it be?

There will always be roadblocks, obstacles, and challenges in the art world, but what matters is staying true to your practice, believing in its purpose, and never straying from your path. Resilience, authenticity and consistency are key to creating meaningful work.
